Tragedy struck Sherwell Farm in Plympton when 17-year-old Luke Searle, a passionate aspiring farmer, lost his life in a heart-wrenching accident. On 22nd June, Luke was operating a tractor and baling machine when he noticed a fault. As he bravely attempted to fix the malfunction, tragedy unfolded. The bale wrapper restarted unexpectedly, causing fatal injuries.

Emergency services, including air and land ambulances, rushed to the scene, but despite their efforts, Luke couldn’t be saved. His family, close friends with the farm owners, have requested privacy as they navigate this devastating loss. Luke, a student at Cornwall-based Duchy College, was truly dedicated to his dreams of a farming career. He was known as a sociable young man who loved his work.

An inquest revealed that the machine’s malfunction had no ‘Safe Stop’ procedures in place, contributing to the accident. Devon Area Coroner, Nicholas Lane, recorded the death as accidental, highlighting Luke’s bright future in farming alongside his brother, William. Friends and family remember Luke fondly, cherishing the joy he brought to their lives.

This incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of safety measures in agriculture. Our hearts go out to Luke’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.
