Reform UK Wales candidate John Clark is under fire for his controversial comments about NATO and Vladimir Putin. Clark, a prominent figure in Wales politics, has stirred the pot by suggesting NATO played a role in the Ukraine conflict, and he has been criticised for statements appearing to defend Putin. In past posts, Clark claimed, “NATO wants to bleed Russia dry,” and controversially argued that former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak “hates the British people more than Putin.” He’s also made eyebrow-raising remarks about the Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny’s death, casting doubt on Putin’s involvement but later clarifying that Putin “is a brutal dictator” responsible for Navalny’s death.

Calls for Clark to step down are growing louder. Labour MS Mick Antoniw and Bangor Conwy Môn candidate Janet Finch Saunders have both expressed concern. Meanwhile, Liberal Democrat Welsh leader Jane Dodds condemned any attempts to excuse Russia’s actions, saying, “Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was illegal and unprovoked.”

The controversy comes amid a wave of resignations within the party, with several candidates stepping down, citing concerns about the party’s direction and priorities. As the Senedd election looms, Clark remains a candidate for a potentially winnable seat, keeping his position amidst this storm.

Whether this will impact Reform UK’s performance in the upcoming election remains to be seen, but it’s clear that Clark’s comments have sparked a significant political debate in Wales. What’s your take on this situation? Is it time for Clark to step aside, or do you think his remarks are being blown out of proportion? Share your thoughts!
