Cardiff City is on the verge of another promotion, and it brings back memories of that magical 2017/18 season. It’s been eight years since that unforgettable triumph, and the heroes of that era have since embarked on new journeys, filled with successes, challenges, and even heartbreak.
Sol Bamba was the talismanic defender, always a joy on and off the pitch, who sadly passed away following his battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Junior Hoilett brought flair and goals to the pitch and is now showcasing his skills with Swindon Town. Meanwhile, Neil Etheridge, the former shot-stopping genius of Cardiff, is leading both on and off the field at Thailand’s Buriram United and the Philippine national team.
Sean Morrison, the once-captain and warrior at the heart of defence, now shares his insights as a pundit. The solid Bruno Ecuele Manga continues his footballing journey in France, while Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, despite past controversies, now plays alongside Callum Paterson at MK Dons.
Long-serving Joe Ralls, the heart and engine of the midfield, left a mighty legacy with over 400 appearances before joining Plymouth. Kenneth Zohore, once pivotal in Cardiff’s promotion campaign, is now playing in Denmark, while Paterson continues his charismatic goal celebrations with MK Dons.
Elsewhere, Joe Bennett’s resilience sees him push on in the lower leagues at Walton & Hersham. The ever-reliable Lee Peltier now brings his experience as a football agent, and Aron Gunnarsson is making his mark in Qatar after years of dedication with the Bluebirds.
Though each path is unique, from triumphs like Craig Bryson transitioning to co-owning a gym, to Greg Halford and Omar Bogle overcoming personal battles, their legacies with Cardiff City endure. Whether they’re influencing games on the field, sharing wisdom post-retirement, or honouring those who’ve left us, these heroes will always hold a special place in the hearts of Cardiff City fans.
Here’s to hoping the current squad can match the heights of these legendary Bluebirds. 🐦💙 #CityAsOne #CardiffCity #BluebirdsHeroics
