🌳🌿 Cardiff’s beloved Coed Bychan woods are causing a stir as trees are felled to make way for a new housing estate. Residents in the Pentrebane area are seeing red over the loss of their cherished green space. Angela Berrow, a local, feels the heart of the community is being ripped apart. “It’s shocking to see the pathways blocked and machinery running rampant,” she says.

Locals have watched in dismay as trees have been cleared to allow heavy goods vehicles access to the future site of 307 homes. The developer, Barratt Redrow, insists the tree removal was necessary for safety due to ash dieback and promises future replanting to restore the area. 🌳
But for long-term residents like Paul Berrow, it’s more than fallen trees. “I’ve been visiting these woods since I was a kid. It’s heartbreaking,” he shares. The presence of vehicles is not only cutting off access but reportedly driving local wildlife out, with foxes now visiting nearby streets.

Dog walkers like Lee Napier have been vocal too. “Hawks and woodpeckers are losing their territory, leaving them nowhere to hunt,” he explains. 🐦🦊

Barratt Redrow assures they’re in line with planning laws and under ecological supervision. They’re committed to a robust replanting programme, promising new trees, shrubs, and even a wildflower meadow to make amends.
Local nature lovers hope the area can soon regain its tranquillity, but the current state is leaving a bitter taste. Stay tuned for updates as this story develops. 🏡🌲
