Our Wales Deaf Rugby Union teams, both men’s and women’s, are the reigning world champions! They’ve conquered the global stage in Argentina in 2023 and are now gearing up to defend their title in Japan this November. But there’s a hurdle off the pitch – they need to raise £150,000 to compete!

With £100,000 already secured thanks to amazing support from fans and sponsors, the teams still have a little way to go. The cost per person, including players and essential staff, is around £4.5k for flights, accommodation, and more. The WRU, initially quiet, is now backing them with training facilities, and Welsh rugby legends like Gavin Henson, Alun Wyn Jones, and Sam Warburton are pitching in by donating signed jerseys for auction.

Corporate allies like Specsavers are sponsoring kits and offering free hearing tests, and MSG Tours is helping by removing tour fees, saving a whopping £30,000. Fundraising events are in full swing, from The Gnoll in Neath raising £3,000 to upcoming gigs at Aberavon Quins and Kiwis in Cardiff.

Lee Llewellyn, the team manager, is pushing limits, running the Newport Half Marathon despite a past knee injury, raising an additional £4k. Preparations are heating up with training programmes and warm-up fixtures aplenty.

This isn’t just a journey to Japan; it’s a celebration of resilience and community spirit. Together, we can propel these champions back to the world stage where they belong! Keep an eye out for events and ways to support our deaf rugby icons. Let’s get behind them and make this dream a reality! 🏆🌍
