A tragic story has emerged from Wales where Aurin Makepeace has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of her ex-partner, Steven Rothwell. The heartbreaking incident took place in August 2025, when a heated argument turned fatal at Steven’s flat in Prestatyn. The two had previously met while incarcerated and maintained contact even after their relationship ended in 2023.

On the evening of August 18, tensions escalated after a row involving Steven’s recent ex-girlfriend, leading to a violent altercation. Later that night, Makepeace fatally stabbed Steven before staying at the flat until morning. Despite attempting to cover up the crime, with claims of self-defence unraveling, forensic evidence and witness accounts left no room for doubt.

Makepeace, who was found guilty of murder after a swift jury verdict, will serve a minimum of 27 years behind bars. Detective Inspector Simon Mills pointed out inconsistencies in her story, with forensics proving she lied about the night’s events. The court heard how she falsely reported the scene from a different location, attempting to mislead authorities.
A tribute from Steven’s family painted a picture of a man with a gentle heart, a love for literature, and a sharp wit. His tragic death has left an irreplaceable void for those who knew and cherished him.
As justice is served, we hope this brings some closure to Steven’s family and friends. Let’s remember the importance of safeguarding lives and offering support to those around us who may be facing domestic strife. Stay kind and vigilant, everyone.
