Meet Tony Gale: a soldier, prison officer, and private military contractor who faced danger in the world’s most perilous places. But his biggest battle began at home. After returning to Wales from his final assignment in Syria in 2020, Tony was struck by a mysterious illness that turned his world upside down. Overnight, he lost sight in one eye and was later diagnosed with stress-induced Type 2 diabetes. In the years that followed, the diabetes claimed his vision completely and even led to the loss of toes due to gangrene.

Despite these hardships, Tony’s story is one of resilience and reinvention. He struggled not only with his health but also with the emotional weight of his past. Raised to be tough, Tony admits he buried his emotions—an oversight he believes contributed to his illness. “I worked all over the world and faced some bad guys, but losing my sight was the most frightening thing I’ve ever encountered. It broke me,” he confesses.

But even as he adapts to life without sight and full mobility, Tony is determined not to let it hold him back. He’s cooked for the homeless, taken on thrilling adventures like tunnel parachuting in Manchester, and even raced on a track with a guide. Now, he’s channeling his experiences into helping others. As part of the Sight Loss Council Cymru, Tony advocates for those with impaired vision across Wales, determined to make life a little brighter for those facing similar challenges.
Through his journey, he’s learned the importance of confronting life’s pressures head-on and is now making it a mission to show others a new perspective on living with sight loss. “What does blind look like?” Tony asks, challenging perceptions and encouraging understanding and empathy. His inspiring tale is a reminder of the power of resilience and community support in overcoming the toughest obstacles.
