Legal Standoff Ensues as Welsh University Rape Trial Ends in Deadlock

A jury couldn’t decide on a verdict in a striking case involving two students from Aberystwyth University. George Cleaton, 25, stood accused of raping a fellow student after a night out back in 2023. The alleged incident, which took place in the town, involved a meeting between two individuals who were familiar with each other.

During the Swansea Crown Court trial, it was stated that Cleaton had asked the other student a rather explicit question, which was declined. However, both agreed that Cleaton would go back to the complainant’s flat but only for a “cuddle”. The situation allegedly escalated, with the complainant later claiming to have woken up to an unwanted encounter.

Cleaton’s version was quite different. He insisted they had consensual intercourse and followed up with a message the next day, expressing regret if he’d “taken advantage” while both were under the influence.

The prosecution highlighted the serious accusation while the defence argued that considerable doubt lingered over the events described. The complexity of the case was reflected in the jury’s inability to reach a unanimous or majority verdict, despite extensive deliberations.

The prosecution may push for a retrial, so this case is far from over. What are your thoughts on retrials in cases with a hung jury? Let us know below!
