Big news in the world of grocery adverts—Lidl and Iceland have made history as the first to face ad bans under the UK’s new rules! The government’s latest efforts to curb childhood obesity have set sights on food and drink ads that showcase high fat, salt, and sugar (HFSS) content, aiming to limit their broadcast from 5:30am to 9pm on TV and online at any time.

Here’s how it all went down:
➡️ Lidl Northern Ireland removed a post featuring Pain Suisse, classified as an HFSS item.
➡️ Iceland pulled ads with Swizzles sweets and certain savoury snacks after a bit of a mix-up.
➡️ Meanwhile, other food items, like Lidl’s cheese pretzel and veggies or Iceland’s Luxury Beef Joint, dodged the ban.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has been working hard to ensure compliance, dismissing some complaints along the way, like an influencer’s post for German Doner Kebab that didn’t break any rules.

The ASA reminds us that they’re in charge of applying these new rules fairly. As these guidelines come into force, brands are learning to adapt, ensuring healthier options shine in the spotlight.
