🚦🚗 Many drivers might be unknowingly breaking the law! 🚶♀️🚴♂️

Did you know that since a Highway Code update in 2022, drivers must give way to pedestrians waiting to cross the road? Yes, even those just waiting at junctions! This update is part of a broader effort to protect our most vulnerable road users like pedestrians, cyclists, and horse riders. The changes have introduced a “hierarchy of road users,” holding drivers of bigger vehicles more responsible for the safety of others.
Despite this, a surprising number of drivers are unaware and might be risking penalties. In fact, a recent survey showed only a quarter of drivers consistently give way to pedestrians at junctions. That’s not all – cyclists also need priority at roundabouts, and drivers must give at least 1.5 metres of space when overtaking them.

Recognising this gap in awareness, the Department for Transport (DfT) is gearing up for a new campaign to make sure everyone knows these rules. They’ve already used their THINK! campaigns to spread the word, emphasising the importance of safer roads for walking, cycling, and horse riding.
And here’s a quick tip for car passengers too: try opening your car door with the hand furthest from it to force a quick check over your shoulder for passing cyclists. Simple, but effective!
So, if you thought you knew the rules, it might be time for a refresher. Check out the Highway Code or visit the RAC’s website to stay informed. Let’s all do our part to make roads safer for everyone! 🌍🛣️
