A Birmingham man learned the hard way that a “last drink” before sentencing isn’t a great idea. David Bird, 57, turned up at Birmingham Crown Court drunk and ended up pushing a security guard who’d asked him to leave. Bird, expecting to be sentenced to prison time, decided to have a final drink while waiting for his case to be called.

When he returned, security quickly noticed his condition and twice asked him to leave the court. In response, Bird shoved a security officer, leading to an immediate common assault charge. With a history of prior offences, Bird was already on bail for assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH). He pleaded guilty at the first opportunity and apologised to the officer, who didn’t sustain injuries but experienced discomfort.
The magistrate highlighted the seriousness of assaulting a public servant while on bail. Bird was fined £275, which includes a victim surcharge and court costs. A collection order was also issued, potentially involving bailiffs if the amount isn’t paid.

This unexpected twist came when Bird anticipated just sentencing, reminding us all that sometimes actions taken in moments of stress can lead to even more trouble. Let this be a reminder: there are better ways to handle pre-court nerves!
