🚗💡 Cardiff drivers, heads up! In less than two years, over 20,000 drivers have been fined a whopping £500,000 for using a sneaky shortcut through Llanishen’s Crystal Glen estate, meant to bypass rush-hour traffic. 🏠 A “permit gate” was set up in 2023 at Fishguard Road and Crystal Glen to curb the rat run, following pleas from residents. The gate, operational from 7am to 7pm on weekdays, means non-local drivers face a £70 fine (or £35 if paid quickly) for unauthorised access. 🛑

Locals are loving the peace. Bernard, a resident, notes, “It’s like a rat race out there no more. Traffic’s way down and drivers are slowing.” Emma adds it’s safer for her kids, though concerns linger about increased traffic on other roads. 🚦
Even with fewer fines now being issued, Crystal Glen has seen traffic levels plunge by 55% since the scheme started. But is this just shifting congestion elsewhere? Rhys, Emma’s partner, thinks so. The council, however, claims neighbouring roads are still coping fine. 🤔

The money collected isn’t just sitting around. Cardiff Council’s revenue from traffic fines has soared, funding transport and infrastructure improvements. 🚍🏗️ With the trial set to conclude soon, we’ll see what impact this has long-term on Cardiff’s roads. Stay tuned! 🔍
