Exciting news! As of April 6, the UK has seen a major overhaul in employment rights aimed at benefiting around 15 million workers. These changes, ushered in by the Employment Rights Act 2025, are designed to create a fairer and more secure work environment.

Here’s what you need to know:
1. Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) has been revamped! Now, all employees can access sick pay from day one, with no earnings threshold or three-day waiting period. This means immediate support when you’re unwell, especially for the lowest-paid workers.

2. Day-one rights have been extended to include parental and bereavement leave, ensuring families have the support they need from the outset of employment.
3. The controversial fire and rehire practice has been banned, ensuring greater job security and improving working conditions.
4. Employers are now encouraged to publish plans to tackle gender pay gaps and support employees experiencing menopause in workplaces with over 250 employees.
5. Stronger protections are in place against workplace harassment and unfair dismissal. Starting January 2027, protection against unfair dismissal will be available after just six months of employment.
These reforms are backed by ministers who believe these initiatives will lead to better health, wellbeing, job satisfaction, and a boost in economic output. TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak supports these changes, emphasising how they are beneficial for both employees and employers.
Acas, the independent expert on workplace relations, is ready to guide both businesses and workers through these changes, ensuring everyone understands the new rules.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer called it “the biggest upgrade to workers’ rights in a generation,” highlighting its positive impact on living standards and the economy.
