University Responds Promptly to Threats of Violence by Student

A Welsh college recently sent out a statement after a student, Theodore Hopes, was convicted for making alarming threats. Hopes, 18, from Llandrindod Wells, had threatened to harm people at Newtown College and disturbingly referenced school shootings. He was caught making Nazi salutes and had material related to historical atrocities. When authorities investigated, they discovered a “Mass Murderer” document on his phone.

Last December, police visited his father’s house and seized a legally-owned air rifle. In a chilling revelation, Hopes confessed to a healthcare professional about fantasising violence at his own college. The subsequent investigation unveiled concerning content on his phone, including a piece addressed to political parties and media labeled as a “manifesto.”

Despite a clean record, Hopes admitted to the threats and received a two-year community order. He must participate in rehabilitation and have his phone use supervised for a year. The court voiced concern over his dangerous views and fixation on violence and extremist material.

In response to the incident, Newtown College reassured everyone of their robust safety protocols and commitment to a safe learning atmosphere. They stressed the importance of confidentiality in legal matters while affirming the ongoing review of their safeguarding measures. The college remains dedicated to supporting the wellbeing of students and staff in light of these unsettling events.
