Scott Johnson, the charismatic Aussie who captured the hearts of Welsh rugby fans, opens up about his journey with Wales, 20 years after his transformational stint. From making his mark as an assistant coach to taking charge after Mike Ruddock’s unexpected exit, Johnson’s time with Wales was nothing short of iconic.
Living now in the serene Gold Coast of Queensland, Scott fondly recalls his days with the Welsh national team. “From the moment I set foot in Wales, I knew it was my kind of place,” he shares. Known for his larger-than-life personality, he played a crucial role in Wales’ revival leading up to that unforgettable 2005 Grand Slam win. Who could forget the electric atmosphere at the Millennium Stadium, with Scott’s passion lighting up the sidelines?
Johnson’s career might have taken him around the globe—from Australia to France, and the USA to Scotland—but it’s his Welsh chapter that stands out. He embraced the culture, the people, and the raw passion for rugby. He says, “Wales is where I truly felt a connection to rugby union culture.”
It wasn’t all smooth sailing, though. The road was bumpy with some tough losses and the media’s gaze on the team dynamics when Ruddock stepped down. But through it all, Scott’s dedication to Welsh rugby never wavered. “I wanted nothing but success for the team and Mike,” he insists.
Fast forward to now, Scott still keeps an eye on Welsh rugby and was even consulted about the vacant WRU director of rugby role last year. Although he didn’t take the role, his connection to Wales remains strong. “I’d love to see Welsh rugby succeed. It holds a special place in my heart.”
As for what’s next, Scott hints there’s “one more big job” out there for him, and he wouldn’t rule out a return to Wales. We’ll be watching this space, Scott!
