Tragic Outcome: Neglected Inmate’s Weigh Loss Goes Unnoticed by Prison Authorities

A recent report has spotlighted troubling failings in prison healthcare. Mark Waterman, a 54-year-old inmate at HMP Swansea, tragically died from cancer. The real shocker? Delays in addressing his unexplained weight loss and abnormal blood tests might have contributed to his untimely death. He was initially remanded on an arson charge last June and sadly passed away on October 7th.

The prison ombudsman, Adrian Usher, highlighted that healthcare staff took too long to investigate Waterman’s concerning symptoms. An independent review called for urgent improvements in how the prison handles such cases, especially regarding abnormal blood markers and sudden weight changes.

While the investigation made 11 additional recommendations unrelated to Waterman’s death, it’s clear improvements are needed. Mr Usher expressed sincere condolences to Waterman’s family, who were contacted during the inquiry but chose not to contribute further.
