Heads up, parents! If your teenager is planning to continue their education or training after their GCSEs or National 5s, there’s something you need to do so you don’t lose out on Child Benefits. HMRC is sending out 1.5 million letters as a reminder, but you don’t have to wait for yours to take action.

Child Benefit is a handy £27.05 a week for your eldest (or only) child, totalling £1,406.60 a year, and £17.90 for each additional child. It’s a real financial boost, so if you know your teen’s plans, hop onto the HMRC app or GOV.UK now to extend your claim. No need to panic and wait for the letter!

This benefit continues for those in full-time non-advanced education or approved unpaid training. Check out the eligible courses on GOV.UK. Just a heads up, if you or your partner earn between £60k and £80k, you’ll need to consider the High Income Child Benefit Charge.

Last year, over 874,000 savvy parents extended their claims, many doing so from the convenience of their phones. Why not join them? It takes just minutes and you’ll have one less thing to worry about.
Remember, if your teen’s course or training is already reported to HMRC, no further action is needed. But if they’re starting something new, make sure your claim is updated.
Stay informed and manage your claim easily through the HMRC app, from checking payments to adding kids–it’s all there. Got concerns about dodgy emails with QR codes? HMRC will never ask you to scan one anywhere other than their official platforms—report anything suspicious to phishing@hmrc.gov.uk.
Don’t be caught off guard. Act now to keep those helpful Child Benefit payments coming! 📬
