Exciting plans are in the works in Abercraf, Ystradgynlais! A former church, St David’s, might soon become an extraordinary family home. Disused since 2016, this historic gem, built in 1912, is on the brink of a new chapter, thanks to applicants Dan Borba and Veronica Kauer.

Their proposal promises to preserve the building’s rich history while transforming it into a unique and sustainable living space. Imagine an open-plan design in the nave, a home gym above a study, and a kitchen-dining area where the organ chamber once stood. They’re even planning to turn the vestry into a utility area with a modern patio.
Importantly, the surrounding graveyard is to remain undisturbed, respecting the local heritage. Not a listed building, St David’s was sold in 2021, allowing the new owners the chance to breathe life back into it as their primary residence.

The project shows how historic buildings can be thoughtfully adapted for modern living while preserving their essential charm. Keep an eye out, as a decision from the national park authority is expected soon. This could be a wonderful blend of history and contemporary living, right in the heart of Powys!
