**A Burglary Unlocked the Dark Secret of My Life**

Imagine thinking your childhood was perfect, only to find out it was a nightmare. Lizzie Jones, now 49, bravely shares her harrowing ordeal of being raped and abused by her own father, David Terrence Pethig, from the tender age of four. Living in Wrexham, North Wales, with a loving mum and a brother, Lizzie’s life seemed picture-perfect from the outside. But when her mum was away working, her father, who should have protected her, did the unthinkable.

He used “sick games” as a guise, which gradually escalated to horrific abuse lasting until she was 15. Lizzie never spoke out due to fear, as her father threatened harm to her mum if she told anyone. But the truth didn’t stay hidden forever. In 2011, after a burglary revealed Pethig’s vile collection of indecent images, the first signs of his monstrous acts emerged. Yet, shockingly, he dodged jail time for those charges.
Courage finally gripped Lizzie, and after confiding in her mum, they went to the police. Her dad was then charged with multiple counts of indecent assault and rape. February 2023 saw justice served with a 19-year sentence.
Even with her father behind bars, Lizzie battles daily with flashbacks and PTSD. Therapy is her beacon of hope. She’s penned poetry to process her trauma and maintains that while justice is served, the scars remain.
Her story is a stark reminder of bravery and resilience and shines a light on the realities many suffer in silence. Lizzie’s hope? Encouraging others trapped in similar sann situations to find their voices too.
