Breaking News: Brits have crowned Lionel Messi as the ultimate American sports icon, even surpassing legends like Michael Jordan and Tom Brady! 🏆🇺🇸
In a surprising twist, a survey of 1,000 UK fans of US sports revealed that the football superstar, who’s been dazzling fans with Inter Miami CF since 2023, takes the top spot. While Michael Jordan and Tom Brady were expected favourites, it’s Messi who’s stealing hearts across the pond.
The poll also highlighted other adored athletes, including beloved MLS star David Beckham and basketball legends Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his teammate Travis Kelce also made it to the top 30, alongside basketball icon Shaquille O’Neal.
Interestingly, 85% of British fans confess that it’s the individual players who piqued their interest in US sports. And here’s a fun fact: 43% admitted they’d switch their allegiance if their favourite player moved teams—a sentiment even stronger among the young fans aged 18 to 24, where it jumps to a whopping 77%.
Travel dreams are alive and well, as more than two-thirds of UK fans have made the journey to the US to catch an NFL or NBA game, with 23% planning to do so.
Football (or soccer in the US) reigns supreme with Brits, with the National Football League edging out Major League Soccer as the top league of interest. But basketball, baseball, and hockey aren’t far behind. And let’s not forget the digital frontier—over 44% dive into online fan communities to keep the spirit alive, proving the power of social media for sports engagement.
Despite time zones and subscription fees being a challenge, nothing’s stopping these dedicated fans from connecting with their US sports heroes and keeping the global sports community buzzing! 🌍
