In a shocking twist of events, the hantavirus outbreak on the cruise ship MV Hondius has been traced back to a Dutch birdwatcher. 70-year-old Leo Schilperoord embarked on his dream trip across South America with his wife, Mirjam. Their adventures, however, took a tragic turn after a visit to an infamous landfill site outside Ushuaia, Argentina.

Dubbed “the end of the world,” the site is notoriously home to rare Patagonian birds. Unfortunately, it’s also home to infected rodents, and Leo and Mirjam likely contracted the deadly Andes strain of the hantavirus there. After setting sail from Ushuaia, Leo soon fell ill on April 6 with symptoms like fever and stomach pain and heartbreakingly died on the ship just days later.

Mirjam’s journey home with Leo’s body took a devastating turn. She too became unwell, passing away in South Africa before she could board a flight to the Netherlands. In a poignant farewell, obituaries in their village of Haulerwijk mourn their loss, saying, “Like birds in flight, we will miss you and the stories.”

The outbreak has already resulted in six hantavirus cases tied to the MV Hondius, including three British citizens, according to the World Health Organisation. Stay informed and stay safe!
