Dylan Dawes, a former BBC producer, has been sentenced for possessing thousands of indecent images of children. The Cardiff Crown Court heard that Dawes, 50, who worked with well-known figures like Rhod Gilbert and Jason Mohammad, had over 6,000 images stored on various devices, including a laptop and two iPads.

Despite his claims that colleagues could have accessed his devices at the BBC’s open-plan offices in Cardiff, the court found Dawes guilty. He denied having any knowledge of the images, which included extremely disturbing content. Dawes attempted to shift blame, suggesting others had access to his devices for work-related purposes.

During sentencing, Judge Eugene Egan described Dawes as an “intelligent man” who needs to face his actions’ gravity through rehabilitation. Dawes received an 18-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and will participate in a 30-day rehabilitation activity. He also faces a 10-year sex offender notification requirement and a sexual harm prevention order.

This case highlights the devastating impact of child sexual abuse material, as emphasised by the NSPCC, which stresses the need for online safety measures to protect children from such exploitation.
