In a shocking courtroom revelation, Rico Gedel, the prisoner who admitted to stabbing former Lostprophets frontman Ian Watkins, confessed he isn’t losing sleep over Watkins’ death. Watkins, a convicted paedophile, was attacked last October in his cell at HMP Wakefield by Gedel. The incident has stirred quite a storm with Gedel clearing the air, stating his only guilt was for Watkins’ victims, expressing empathy for them as they never got to confront him for his crimes.

The 25-year-old, already serving a life sentence for murder, claimed he assaulted the singer in hopes of being moved away from the prison wing shared with sex offenders. The attack, he argues, was never intended to end in death.

The trial continues with Gedel, alongside co-accused Samuel Dodsworth, defending against the murder charge. Amidst the tension in the courtroom, Gedel maintained that Dodsworth handed him the makeshift knife used in the attack. However, the defence pointed out inconsistencies in Gedel’s statements, noting that his story changed several times.
Caught on bodycam footage grinning after the attack, Gedel explained his smile was a mask for his emotions, a coping mechanism he’s resorted to while facing intense situations.
Ian Watkins, infamous for his heinous crimes against children, had been serving a 29-year sentence. Opinions are divided as the trial unfolds, but one thing is certain—it’s a case that continues to reverberate throughout the nation.
