📢🔥 Safety First! A Cardiff landlord has been fined after some shocking fire risks were uncovered at his rental property on Cowbridge Road East. 🚨

Cardiff Council inspectors found a range of alarming issues from water leaking into the electrical system, lack of fire alarms, incomplete fire doors, no fixed heating, and even a bedroom with no safe escape route! 😱
John Hitchman Small, the landlord in question, was found guilty of 19 housing offences and slapped with fines and costs totalling over £980. He also wasn’t registered with Rent Smart Wales, a must for landlords in Wales.

The property, a Victorian terraced building, had an annex converted without planning permission. After a tenant’s complaint in September 2025, council officers discovered several hazards, leading to an emergency prohibition order. This order prevents the annex from being used until it’s safe!
Council officials emphasised the importance of landlords cooperating early to avoid putting tenants at risk and facing legal actions. 📜

This case highlights the need for proper maintenance and legal compliance in rental properties for the safety of everyone involved. Let’s keep our homes safe, Cardiff! 🏠✨
