Big news for Morrisons shoppers! The supermarket chain has announced plans to shut down 100 stores across the UK due to skyrocketing costs linked to new government policies. This move threatens hundreds of jobs and marks a step back in Morrisons’ strategy to expand its convenience store presence.
CEO Rami Baitiéh explained that the company is grappling with increased expenses from higher National Insurance contributions, minimum wage hikes, and new recycling levies. These cost pressures have made it nearly impossible to bring these struggling stores back to profitability.
Morrisons, which once claimed a spot in the ‘Big Four’ supermarkets, has been outpaced by budget rivals like Aldi. They say their future focus will be on franchise-operated stores rather than company-run outlets. Despite the closures, they continue to run approximately 1,700 convenience stores, including about 700 franchises.
After acquiring McColl’s in a £190 million rescue deal, Morrisons transformed many of their outlets into Morrisons Daily stores. However, they’ve also been burdened by debt since their £10 billion acquisition by Clayton Dubilier & Rice.
Morrisons assures they will consult with affected employees and unions, striving to redeploy workers into nearby stores and warehouses where possible.
