Swansea Mourns a Beloved Leader and Visionary Advocate

Swansea is mourning the loss of a remarkable leader and beloved friend, Cllr Robert Francis-Davies. Known for his vibrant personality and creative vision, this dedicated public servant left an indelible mark on the city he loved. ‘Mr Swansea’, as he was fondly called, served as a Labour councillor since 1983, playing key roles like deputy leader and even following his brother John as Lord Mayor in 2001.

His peers remember him as a mentor and oracle with a flair for fun. Cllr Peter Black of the Liberal Democrat and Independent group fondly recalled how Robert’s mischievous charm shone through even in the council chambers. He was a passionate Swansea City fan too, famously choosing his seat behind the opposing manager just to have a friendly banter.

Perhaps the most touching tribute came from council leader Rob Stewart. He paused with emotion while paying his respects, calling Robert a “true one-off” and reminiscing about his penchant for storytelling. Robert’s quirky tale of a painting inspiring “Lady in Red” was just one example of his zest for life and humour.

Robert was battling cancer and had taken leave from his cabinet roles, which included overseeing investment, regeneration, tourism, and events. His passing on May 8 at his Uplands home at age 78 has left a profound void. Condolences pour in for his wife Suzanne and family as the city prepares to bid farewell at his funeral on May 27 at Swansea Minster. Rest in peace, RF-D. Your legacy lives on in every corner of Swansea. 🌹
