Amanda Axiak from Caerphilly is mourning the unimaginable loss of her 11-year-old daughter, Alicia-Adele, who passed away just two weeks after her first symptoms appeared, due to an aggressive brain tumour, DIPG. With a survival expectancy of just 8 to 12 months, DIPG is a harsh reality for far too many, being the leading cause of brain tumour deaths in children in the UK.

Alicia-Adele was so much more than her diagnosis – a vibrant soul, trophy-winning dancer, talented gymnast, and an all-around sports enthusiast. Even in her last days, her loving and selfless spirit shone brightly, comforting other children and ensuring no one felt alone.

Amanda is passionately advocating for greater awareness and urgent action to improve outcomes for brain tumour sufferers. She is turning her heartbreak into hope by launching Alicia-Adele’s Angels, a fundraising group dedicated to supporting Brain Tumour Research. This mission is close to the hearts of many in the community, demonstrated by the 74 runners, including Alicia’s family, friends, and school staff, who participated in the Bryn Meadows Caerphilly 10K & 2K in her memory.

Amanda’s resolve is unwavering: “If we can fund research and prevent another family from experiencing this pain, Alicia’s legacy will live on.” Dr Karen Noble of Brain Tumour Research shares this sentiment, recognising Alicia’s story as a beacon for change and a call for the vital investment needed to combat this devastating disease.
