π Stay Cool, Stay Safe: Reservoirs Arenβt Playgrounds! π«π€

As Wales bakes under record-breaking temperatures, with Cardiff hitting a sizzling 32.9Β°C, it’s vital to remember that while reservoirs may look inviting, they’re not safe for a swim! π¦

Welsh Water is urging everyone to resist the temptation of diving into these waters during the heatwave. Despite their serene appearance, reservoirs hide dangerous hazards like freezing water temperatures, strong currents, and hidden machinery. They’re like an iceberg β what you see isn’t all there is! π§π
Sadly, the lure of open water swimming has already resulted in numerous tragedies across the UK, including right here in Wales. A total of 10 people have lost their lives since the heatwave began.
Here’s the lowdown:
π« Unauthorized swimming isn’t just risky for those taking a dip, but also for anyone attempting a rescue.
π¦ Always heed the safety signs and follow the advice of rangers who are stepping up patrols during the school holidays.
πββοΈ If you’re keen on taking a dip, look for organized open water swimming at approved sites, which are manned by skilled lifeguards.
Owain Manuel, Head Ranger at Lisvane and Llanishen Reservoirs Visitor Centre, reminds us all: βWhile reservoirs can look inviting, they’re extremely dangerous… Stay out of the water and help us keep everyone safe this summer!β
Let’s not turn a day of fun into an emergency! Spread the word, enjoy the sun safely, and keep cool by sticking to safe areas like local pools and supervised beaches. πππ
