The Met Office had warned us with a yellow alert (except for Flintshire), predicting “torrential downpours, frequent lightning, large hail, and gusty winds.” And boy, did Mother Nature deliver!

Around 1,500 homes were left in the dark as power cuts hit Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire. Even Transport for Wales wasn’t spared, with lightning strikes disrupting signalling systems and causing delays.

While the west took the biggest hit, other areas like Aberdare, Rhondda Cynon Taf, and Swansea also experienced isolated lightning and thunder rumblings. Some even got amazing lightning shots on their Ring doorbells!

This electrifying storm followed Tuesday’s blistering 32.9°C in Cardiff, marking the hottest May day ever in Wales. Although it hasn’t really cooled things down yet, the heatwave should finally ease by Friday, according to forecasts.
