A Ceredigion man has been slapped with an £6,410 fine and a 10-year ban on keeping animals after being found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to his three pets. Rhys Ebenezer, 27, avoided an immediate prison sentence but received an 18-week suspended sentence at Llanelli Magistrates’ Court. The case unfolded after RSPCA officers swooped in on his Llangeitho property and found dogs living in shocking conditions.

Among the saddening scenes, one dog named Twig was found lethargically curled up with a large bandage, while another, Charlie, displayed numerous scars and appeared notably thin. The third dog, Champ, wasn’t as lucky. Ebenezer had taken Champ to the vet only to have him put down due to severe injuries that had been left untreated for weeks.

The RSPCA’s investigation revealed that these injuries, allegedly due to “ratting,” were inconsistent with Ebenezer’s claims. [Image: RSPCA]
Ebenezer, who pleaded guilty to the charges, was not only fined but also ordered to complete 15 rehabilitation activity days and will have to abide by a six-month curfew. Additionally, he won’t be seeing any foreign lands for the next year due to a travel ban.
Despite his professional experience working with animals, which the court was made aware of, this didn’t save him from facing justice. The suffering of Twig, Charlie, and Champ paints a haunting picture of neglect, serving as a sobering reminder of the responsibilities that come with being a pet owner. In the end, sparing a visit to the vet cost more than just money; it cost three innocent lives the care they desperately needed.
Let this be a lesson, folks: always prioritise the well-being of your furry friends! 🐾
