Cardiff’s Central Square isn’t looking its best right now, and residents are talking about it. Just steps away from key landmarks like Cardiff Central railway station and the Principality Stadium, this bustling space is giving off a “grubby and bland” vibe, especially on a busy Monday morning.

John Rees, a local, shared his thoughts, suggesting that the first impression of our beautiful city is suffering. What’s catching visitors’ eyes? Dirty paving slabs, litter, graffiti, and even trainers hanging from a lamppost. It’s not the welcome we want for Cardiff!

A council spokesperson explained that the usual clean-up routine had hit a snag due to a vehicle breakdown. This left Central Square looking less than stellar for about four days, but a replacement vehicle is now hard at work to bring back some sparkle.
However, residents are keen to see ongoing maintenance. One person noted how cigarette butts and litter gather in hotspots, making iconic areas feel neglected. Take Central Square’s rain gardens, for instance—sadly, they’ve been likened to giant ashtrays instead of the lush green spaces they should be.
Cardiff Council assures us that Central Square is vital for hosting major events and is working on solutions to balance civic space with the practical needs of large crowds. In the meantime, locals are hopeful to see a regular clean-up to keep our city looking its best every day, not just during events.
So, what do you think? How can we keep Cardiff looking as vibrant as the people who call it home? Share your thoughts! 🌍🌟 #Cardiff #KeepCardiffClean
