In a heartbreaking Christmas Day tragedy, retired vet Stefania Glowka, 64, has admitted to killing her 86-year-old mother, Tamara, in Wiltshire. Stefania, who had been her mother’s sole carer for 17 years, reportedly “could not cope” and allegedly strangled her mother with a belt. She then attempted to take her own life but was unsuccessful.

Appearing in Bristol Crown Court, Stefania pleaded guilty to manslaughter, claiming diminished responsibility, though she denies the charge of murder. The court heard chilling evidence, including a video where Stefania calmly told police officers, “Good morning – I just killed my mother,” after her failed suicide attempt.

Prosecutors have argued that the act was deliberate, highlighting Stefania’s planned approach, which included getting her affairs in order. A letter addressed to a friend, found in the flat, detailed her despair over her mother’s declining health and her fear of facing old age alone.
The jury was told that Stefania had been overwhelmed by the pressures of caregiving and had reached a breaking point. However, the prosecution insists that despite her mental state, there was no lawful justification for the tragic event.
As Stefania’s trial continues, the question remains whether her mental condition significantly impaired her responsibility or if this was a tragic, but deliberate act. The court is set to determine the degree to which Stefania was aware of her actions on that fateful day.
