Concern for Welsh Osprey as It Swallows Fishing Hook on Live Cam
Nature enthusiasts are on tenterhooks after witnessing Telyn, a cherished osprey, swallow a fishing hook on a live stream at her nest in Cors Dyfi nature reserve in Powys. The majestic bird, busy nurturing her newly hatched chicks, accidentally gulped down the sharp hook from a fish brought to the nest by her mate, Idris.
Conservationists are reviewing the footage with bated breath, fearing the worst for Telyn and her three chicks. If Telyn falls seriously ill, the chicks’ chances of survival would be grim. The nest remains under continuous camera surveillance, allowing viewers to capture this nail-biting moment as Telyn inadvertently ingested the hook.
The Dyfi Osprey Project has expressed their concerns, noting, “Currently, our hands are tied other than to closely monitor Telyn’s condition.” They hope she may regurgitate the hook or that her robust digestive system might tackle the foreign object. “We’ve had fishing lines in the nest previously, but never witnessed an osprey swallow a hook,” they mentioned.
Capturing Telyn for treatment could be detrimental as it would likely result in her chicks not making it during her absence. The project team is prepared for the worst but holding onto hope. Fortunately, they suspect the hook might be a non-barbed variety, reducing the immediate threat posed.
Despite the scare, updates have been positive so far, with no adverse reactions observed 48 hours post-incident. However, until the hook is expelled, Telyn isn’t completely out of danger.
The Dyfi Osprey Project, operating since 2009, has been pivotal in supporting these extraordinary birds, with each year revealing more about their resilience and majesty. Amidst moments of joy and worry, dedicated watchers continue to tune into the YouTube live stream for updates on Telyn, Idris, and their tiny brood. Keep your fingers crossed for a happy outcome! 🦅✨
