England cricket captain Ben Stokes finds himself under the spotlight once again as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) investigates a breach of team protocols at a London nightclub. Stokes, along with fast bowler Gus Atkinson, was reportedly at The Rex Rooms into the early hours of Monday morning, following England’s triumph in the First Test against New Zealand. This outing likely violated the team’s midnight curfew, introduced after an infamous Ashes tour, raising questions about Stokes’ future as captain.

The night began at The White Horse pub in Parsons Green where Stokes joined around 20 others, including cricket mate Joe Root and rugby stars Maro Itoje and Ben Earl. According to an anonymous barman, “The group was civil, just enjoying a few rounds together.” However, the evening took a turn when an altercation allegedly erupted at the nightclub involving a Saracens player, who reportedly aimed a punch at Atkinson but hit an ECB security guard instead.

Saracens are also investigating the incident, aiming to get to the bottom of the story. Meanwhile, the cricket world holds its breath, awaiting the ECB’s decision on squad selection for the upcoming Test against New Zealand at The Oval on June 17. With Stokes likely to be sidelined, it’s a guessing game over who will step up in his place.
This is not the first brush with controversy for Stokes; he was acquitted of affray in 2018 after a Bristol brawl. Yet again, his love for a celebratory drink may have cost him dearly as questions over team discipline arise.
Despite the drama, Stokes was in high spirits post-match, stating, “I’m very happy we won. I probably won’t be smiling until I share a proper beer with the boys.” Those beers, however, might lead to a shake-up in English cricket management. How the dominoes will fall following this night out is anyone’s guess!
