Despite some strong objections, a former psychology clinic on Little Walter Street in Carmarthen is set to transform into a 10-bedroom shared house! Approved by Carmarthenshire Council, this new house of multiple occupation (HMO) will feature five en-suite bedrooms upstairs, a kitchen, communal area, and additional sleeping spaces downstairs. Plus, there’s internal bike storage for the eco-conscious!

Concerns were raised by local councillor Gareth John, who argued that the level of occupation was “totally inappropriate” for the area. With worries about increased noise, refuse, and street parking pressure, some residents were less than thrilled about the change.

But there’s good news! The council’s planning officers gave the green light, citing no external changes to the building and reassurances of a high-quality living environment. It seems like everything needed—shops, cafes, gyms, and bus stops—is just a walk away!

The building already had planning permission for conversion into houses from 2023, so this approval builds on that established residential principle. Despite being in a conservation area, the council’s heritage officer confirmed there’d be no adverse effects.

What do you think, Carmarthen? Could this be a great way to provide more housing options, or does it change the character of the area a bit too much? Share your thoughts! đź’¬
