In a bold move, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has declared that under-16s will be banned from using social media platforms starting early next year! Announcing this at Downing Street, Starmer, a parent himself, emphasised the importance of children’s safety and happiness. 💬🛡️

So, what does this mean for young social media users? Starting from 2027, platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat, to name a few, will no longer be accessible to UK kids under 16! It doesn’t stop there – romantic or sexual AI chatbots are also banned, and gaming platforms will restrict chatting with strangers. 🎮🚫

While some teens might try workarounds, Starmer confidently states that this ban is about setting new societal norms for safety and well-being. “Laws are laws but they’re also an expression of our values,” he said, echoing the thoughts of 83% of parents who believe the risks of social media outweigh the benefits.

This decision follows a major public consultation with over 116,000 responses, where a whopping 91% backed a minimum age for social media use. However, kids are split – 62% feel it’ll make them safer online, but 72% worry about missing out. 🤔

And there’s more! Starmer has also given Apple and Google three months to make it impossible for children to share or view nude images on their devices. 📵📱

What’s your take on this landmark decision? Is it a win for child safety, or does it risk leaving kids disconnected? Share your thoughts! 💬🔗
