Residents Disturbed by Stench of Decaying Odor Invading Their Homes

Residents in Aberarad, Carmarthenshire, are fed up with odour and noise issues stemming from a local creamery. Nestled by the B4333, this site processes hundreds of tonnes of milk into pizza cheese every day. Unfortunately, the process leaves locals dealing with the unpleasant smell akin to a “rotting carcass” wafting through their homes. Jen Jones, a resident, shared her frustration, saying she’s been unable to sleep with windows open for years.

Summer makes it worse, as the smell and noise from extractor fans intensify. Locals have also raised concerns about suspected pollution incidents affecting the nearby Afon Arad. Dairy Partners Ltd., the creamery’s owner, holds an environmental permit but has faced several complaints and violations. The company claims they’re committed to safe operations and plan to invest in upgrading their facilities to curb these issues.

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has noted offensive odours linked to the site’s effluent treatment plant. Yet, improvements have been slow. NRW also investigated water pollution incidents and compliance issues over the years, issuing warnings and calling for urgent action to address noise emissions.

While residents, including the Arad Community Action Group, don’t want the creamery closed, they feel it’s high time local authorities stepped in more effectively. Despite some efforts to mitigate the problems, people like Megan Ceiriog-Jones find the noise from tanker deliveries and unexpected venting sounds disruptive.

Carmarthenshire Council is aware of the complaints but currently lacks enough evidence for formal action. Residents are encouraged to document instances to help build a case. Local councillor, Aled Vaughan Owen, assured that complaints would be followed up under statutory procedures. The community hopes for a prompt resolution, so they can enjoy their homes without the constant worry of unpleasant odours and noise.
