Ever had that first sip of a cold drink on a sunny day? You know, the one that makes you go “ahhh, luvverly!” According to a survey of 2,000 adults, “luvverly” is officially Britain’s favourite word to capture that refreshing moment. This classic British expression harks back to the mid-20th century and has stood the test of time, becoming a beloved part of our collective vocabulary.

But did you know different regions have their own unique exclamations? Londoners might shout “banger,” while folks in Scotland opt for a subtle “braw.” In the East Midlands, a hearty “bosh” does the trick, and up in the North West, it’s all about calling it “boss.”

Dr Chris Montgomery from the University of Sheffield teamed up with Strongbow to dive into the fascinating world of regional first-sip expressions. He was pleasantly surprised to find that local dialects are alive and kicking, serving as social badges that show off our unique identities and heritage.
Nothing quite matches the joy of that first sip moment for 31% of Brits, especially on a hot summer day. A tough day at work? 22% say a cool drink ranks high among their simple pleasures, rivalled only by slipping into comfy clothes or fresh bed sheets.
But beware! A warm drink or bad company can quickly ruin this delightful experience. And don’t even think about serving it in a plastic cup—21% say that’s a dealbreaker!
Max Wainwright from HEINEKEN UK adds, “Every corner of Britain has its own way of expressing joy. Whether it’s ‘lush’, ‘proper good’, or simply ‘luvverly’, it’s all about spreading positivity and regional pride.”
So, next time you’re in need of a bit of refreshment, grab your favourite drink, head to the nearest sunny spot, and let that perfect first sip bring out your inner “luvverly!” What’s your go-to expression? Share with us! 🍻🌞
