Imagine sharing a bed with your mum well into your 50s! That’s reality for Rachel Griffiths, 51, from Cardiff, who has been stuck in a one-bedroom flat with her 74-year-old mother, Marilynn Prance, for over four years. Due to a lack of suitable housing options, this unlikely duo is forced to share a bed, making life anything but easy for Rachel.

Marilynn, who was diagnosed with dementia in 2022, had already shown symptoms by 2018. Rachel moved her mum into her small flat when Marilynn could no longer afford her own rent, only to find her condition worsening. Sharing a bed might sound cosy, but Rachel says it’s like having her life on hold. “I can’t have a relationship—I’m sharing my bed with my mother,” she explained. The 70s nostalgia of shared beds is far from comforting when faced with real-world struggles like constant cleaning from accidents caused by her mother’s bladder issues.

Rachel has requested a move from her current flat due to overcrowding and anti-social issues in the area. However, hopes of relocating to Whitchurch remain dashed as the council finds it challenging to offer housing in preferred areas. Despite Cardiff’s efforts to expand affordable housing options, the process is slow, and the waiting list is long.
“This situation is unbelievable in 2026,” Rachel expressed with frustration. She waits and wishes for the space and independence she desperately needs.
Furthermore, ongoing issues of anti-social behaviour in their estate in Tremorfa are under police scrutiny, adding to the stress of their living situation. It’s a difficult wait, but authorities are working towards a solution.
