🚨 Big News for PIP Claimants! 🚨

For the first time ever, PIP claimants in England and Wales have surpassed four million! 📈 According to the latest figures from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), April 2026 saw 4.01 million people receiving Personal Independence Payments, marking a noticeable jump from last year’s 3.74 million. With numbers nearly doubling since January 2019, this is a significant development in the benefits landscape.

The government’s move to delay reforms to the disability benefit system comes in the wake of the Timms Review. As a DWP spokesperson puts it, they’re focused on “fixing the broken system” to better serve disabled individuals and taxpayers alike.
Interestingly, more young people are turning to PIP, with 16.6% of claimants now aged 16-29, up from 14.5% in 2019. However, fewer new claims are getting the nod, with approval rates dropping to 36.6% from 46.2% in April 2024.
Meanwhile, the recently introduced Right to Try scheme is a game-changer, offering disabled claimants the chance to explore work opportunities without automatically facing benefit reassessments. 🎉
Yet, the future may hold more changes. Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Helen Whately has emphasised the need to review the entire PIP system, even suggesting the removal of eligibility for some low-level mental health claims.
