As the heatwave sweeps across Wales, it’s the homeless and rough sleepers who are bearing the brunt of the sizzling temperatures. Charities and councils are stepping up to help, and here’s how.

The Wallich, Wales’ largest homeless charity, is going the extra mile with its outreach teams across Cardiff, Swansea, Bridgend, and beyond. They’re distributing water, sun cream, hats, and essentials to help folks fend off the scorching heat. Jamie-Lee Cole from The Wallich says, “People on the streets face the harshest impacts of climate change, from heatwaves to heavy rain and cold winters.”

The advice? Stay hydrated, hit up public spaces like libraries or Wallich centres during peak heat, and be cautious with drug and alcohol use – especially as dehydration looms. There’s a call for everyone to check on those vulnerable, offering cold drinks, chats, and a helping hand to cooler spots.
Matthew’s House charity in Swansea has also risen to the challenge. With a ‘mist option’ hose to cool guests and hundreds of meals served, they’re doing their bit to bring relief.
Local councils are ensuring the homeless have a safe refuge. Swansea has its Severe Weather Emergency Plan in action, promising beds and advice on staying safe. Cardiff and Newport are ramping up support, sharing vital health tips and opening up accommodation. Pembrokeshire is keeping a watchful eye, offering bottled water and shade guidance.
This collective effort reminds us of the pressing need to look out for our most vulnerable during extreme weather. If you see someone in need, reach out, offer help or alert emergency services if necessary. Keep cool, stay safe, and lend a hand where you can. 🌞💧🏠 #WalesCares #StaySafe #HeatwaveAlert
