Sad news as the beloved Coughlans Bakery, an 89-year-old family-favourite in the South, has had to shut its doors. Co-owned by the hilarious Romesh Ranganathan since 2024, this isn’t the typical punchline we expected from the comedian. He’s expressed being absolutely “gutted” about the closure.

So, what happened? The bakery faced insurmountable challenges, including increased business rates and national insurance—tax pressures that hit many local businesses hard. Managing Director Sean Coughlan explained how the recent spike in fuel prices, due to escalating conflicts abroad, added £20,000 a week to their costs! On top of that, sweltering heatwaves with temps soaring to 35°C have kept footfall low, giving them no choice but to close up shop.

In a heartfelt message, Sean thanked Romesh for his support and enthusiasm, describing him as family. Despite doing everything possible to keep the ovens warm, it just wasn’t enough. 😢

Romesh shared the news with his 1.4 million Instagram followers, saying: “Gutted isn’t the word.” Sean’s words also expressed the collective heartbreak: “We’ve let Romesh down, but we’re thankful for the memorable journey together.”

This closure reminds us of the tough times faced by small businesses. We’ll miss you, Coughlans Bakery! Here’s to hoping for brighter days ahead. ✨
