In a shocking case, a man from Caerphilly was sentenced for a horrific attack on his partner that left her with a burst eardrum. Ben Jakes, 33, launched a brutal assault during an argument on October 14, 2023, leaving his partner fearing for her life. The attack, described as appalling, involved repeated punches to her head, causing severe injuries including a perforated eardrum and a blood clot in her ear. Her home was also trashed, with a door broken off its hinges and a kitchen window smashed.

The assault culminated with Jakes throwing a bottle of cider at a wall and destroying her mobile phone. Fleeing to a neighbour’s for help, the victim received medical attention at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital. The court heard about the emotional toll this incident has taken on the victim, who described living in constant fear of another attack. Despite this, she remains resolute, stating she doesn’t want to feel like a victim in her own home anymore.

At Cardiff Crown Court, Jakes pleaded guilty and received a 27-month suspended sentence, alongside requirements for alcohol abstinence and rehabilitation. Additionally, a restraining order was put in place to protect the victim.
