Known scientifically as velella velella, these tiny blue ocean drifters usually float on water surfaces and are mostly seen from September to March. Measuring just up to 10cm, they’re a fascinating sight, described by the Wildlife Trust as “incredibly strange and beautiful.”

Despite their appearance, they aren’t true jellyfish, yet they do share a striking resemblance to the notorious Portuguese Man O’War, using stinging tentacles to snare prey.

Beachgoer Kev Wardlaw was amazed, saying, “I’ve never seen one before, now I’ve seen hundreds!” His photos show what looks like a scene from another world. 🤩
