Tragic news from Costa Rica: 18-year-old Xander Furlong from Plymouth sadly passed away from natural causes while staying at a hotel in Puntarenas. Xander, a passionate student set to begin his studies in ecology and wildlife management at UWE Bristol, was on an inspiring journey to join a sea turtle conservation project. During an inquest, it was revealed that Xander had been diagnosed with narcolepsy and cataplexy as a child, conditions that did not deter him from pursuing his dreams.

Xander’s mother, Michelle, shared heartfelt memories of her son, describing him as a kind, gentle soul who was determined to succeed. She recalled his last message to their family chat where he expressed his love for Costa Rica but also how much he missed home. Tragically, he passed away on 19th July 2024 after experiencing symptoms like dehydration and a headache.

An autopsy conducted in Costa Rica attributed his death to natural causes, linking it to conditions including arterial hypertension and coronary issues. Xander was under specialist care for his conditions, which were thought to have been associated with a swine flu vaccination in 2010.
Xander’s story is a poignant reminder of a young life full of potential and dedication to making a difference, despite health challenges. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
