A Cardiff school worker is in hot water after allegedly making inappropriate comments to pupils about an “older boyfriend.” Claire Townsend, who was working as an unqualified teacher at Willows High, is facing serious allegations that could lead to her being struck off.

During a recent hearing, it emerged that Townsend shared her personal phone number with pupils via WhatsApp and joined a group chat, reportedly breaking school safeguarding rules. She allegedly shared unnecessary personal details during a sex education class as well. One pupil recounted feeling puzzled over her comments about having an older boyfriend and questioned why such information was shared in class.

The hearing also highlighted Townsend’s presence in the WhatsApp group, where she initially denied involvement but later changed her story. Despite inappropriate messages from students in the chat, which involved discussions of a sexual nature, Townsend failed to report them, choosing instead to respond with what she described as “banter.” This reaction has raised major concerns.
Townsend’s journey from a teaching assistant to an ‘unqualified teacher’ in 2016 is under scrutiny, especially after being placed on a support plan in 2022 for allegedly raising her voice inappropriately at students. Despite showing some improvement in her conduct, questions remain about her professional behaviour.
In response to a parent’s concerns, Townsend eventually removed herself from the WhatsApp group. However, the circumstances around her departure from the chat have been called into question after evidence suggested otherwise.
This ongoing case brings to light the critical importance of maintaining boundaries and professionalism in educational settings. The hearing continues, with Townsend not present to defend her actions. Stay tuned for updates as more details emerge.
