The watchdog Ofcom has just launched an urgent probe into TikTok over concerns about child safety. This act mandates platforms to implement robust age checks to shield kids and teens online.

Currently, TikTok uses ‘age inference’ to estimate users’ ages based on their activity, but Ofcom has raised eyebrows about its effectiveness. With the UK gearing up for stricter social media rules, especially for those under 16, the pressure is on for tech giants to up their game in safeguarding our children.

Ofcom’s Chief Exec, Dame Melanie Dawes, emphasised the importance of proper age checks as a cornerstone of online safety laws. “Too many services have inadequate age checks, and that’s not good enough,” she says. Ofcom wants changes, not just from platforms like TikTok, but also from search engines to prevent kids accessing adult content too easily.

TikTok, on their end, insists they’re committed to safety, having spent billions on making their platform safe and claiming they adhere to the Online Safety Act. They’re ready to cooperate with Ofcom to prove it!
