Heartbreaking news from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as the Ebola outbreak claims at least 930 lives out of 2,344 confirmed cases. In just the past day, 37 people have tragically died, marking the deadliest day yet in this devastating outbreak.

The outbreak, declared in eastern DR Congo on 15 May, is the fastest-growing in history. It’s caused by the less common Bundibugyo virus, for which there is currently no vaccine or approved treatment.

Ebola is a severe and often fatal illness, characterised by sudden flu-like symptoms—high fever, exhaustion, muscle pain, headache, and sore throat. As it progresses, it can lead to vomiting, diarrhoea, impaired organ function, and in severe cases, internal and external bleeding. The virus spreads through contact with the blood or bodily fluids of someone who is infected and showing symptoms.
This frightening outbreak stretches across the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, unleashing havoc on local communities. With a rarer strain than the more well-known Zaire virus responsible for the West African epidemic a decade ago, this outbreak poses unique challenges.
