Heads up, carers! The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is chasing thousands for benefit overpayments, with some debts exceeding a massive £20k. Last year alone, the DWP demanded a staggering £33 million back from unpaid carers due to earnings-related overpayments. Critics argue that despite promised reforms, the system continues to trap carers in debt, drawing comparisons to the notorious Post Office Horizon scandal.

In a bid to fix this, the DWP made changes to curb overpayments, cutting them by about 30% in 2025-26. Yet, the number of carers owing over £20,000 actually increased! More than half of overpayments went beyond £500, and over 1,000 carers are facing debts above £5,000, raising fears of possible fraud investigations. The Carer’s Allowance rule is strict: earn over the threshold, and you lose your entire weekly payment—not just the extra. This lets debts snowball fast if unnoticed.

Reforms were promised two years ago after intense criticism. An independent review in December pointed out internal issues in the DWP rather than carers’ wrongdoings as the main problem. Now, the government is reviewing past decisions and has raised the earnings limit, hoping to prevent debts from spiralling.

Yet, recent data shows many unpaid carers are still falling into debt. Labour MP Anna Dixon and Carers UK’s Emily Holzhausen call for transparency and action from the DWP to tackle this ongoing issue. England and Wales rely on around 5 million unpaid carers, with a third claiming Carer’s Allowance.

The DWP acknowledges the vital role of unpaid carers and promises to support them better by addressing overpayments swiftly, increasing earnings thresholds, and putting in place newer safeguards.
