🌸 Extend Your Sweet Pea Season with Monty Don’s Top Tip! 🌸

Hey garden lovers! 🌿 Are your sweet peas starting to wind down? Don’t worry, Monty Don, our favourite gardening guru, has a simple trick to keep those blooms thriving throughout summer!

Monty suggests regularly picking your sweet pea flowers. Why, you ask? Well, by doing so, you prevent the plants from focusing their energy on seed pods. Instead, they channel all their goodness into producing stunning flowers for weeks on end.
Here’s the scoop: 🫛 As sweet peas form seed pods, they divert energy away from blossoming. Swiftly snipping the flowers stops this process. No seed pods mean more blooms!
Monty advises, “Aim for an optimum picking period of about 10 days and be sure to remove every single flower.” Not only will your garden glow, but you’ll have fragrant bouquets to brighten up your home too. 🌺
Pro Tip: Use scissors to cut the stems as long as possible, and act quickly if you notice any seed heads forming. This keeps your plants vibrant, even into September if the summer weather cooperates!
Agreeing with Monty, Noah Mabey, Senior Gardener at Thornbridge Hall, adds: “Keep harvesting for your indoor vases and trim any spent heads before they seed to ensure continuous blooms.”
According to the RHS, sweet peas flourish in well-drained, fertile soil with plenty of sunlight. Weekly or fortnightly feeding with a liquid fertiliser helps too, but be cautious of overly wet or dry conditions and shaded areas which can hinder flowering.
So, grab those scissors and enjoy a colourful, aromatic burst of sweet peas this summer! 🌼✨
